Trump Admin Asks Supreme Court To Freeze Deadlines In Biden-Era Cases

The U.S. Department of Justice, during Donald Trump’s administration, has formally requested that the Supreme Court suspend legal proceedings related to President Joe Biden’s policies, which encompass student loan forgiveness and environmental regulations. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris has submitted motions to postpone these cases while the new administration conducts a review of the policies in question. Although the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear arguments imminently, the request from Trump’s DOJ aims to halt deadlines, potentially resulting in an indefinite suspension of the cases.

Biden’s student loan forgiveness initiative, which has alleviated debt for more than 5 million students, has encountered legal opposition from Republican attorneys general, who contend that Biden has overstepped his authority. The 5th Circuit Court has blocked Biden’s “borrower defense” rule, designed to cancel loans for students who were defrauded. While the Supreme Court has agreed to examine these matters, the request from the Trump administration could make them irrelevant. Additionally, Trump has expressed opposition to Biden’s climate policies, promoting an increase in domestic fossil fuel production instead.
