The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on individuals and communities alike. As we look forward to a future beyond those challenging times, it is essential to remember the significant hardships many endured over the past few years. Numerous businesses were compelled to close, leading to widespread job losses and, in some cases, homelessness.
While we celebrated the efforts of healthcare professionals in combating the virus, residents of a Virginia neighborhood took the opportunity to express their appreciation for another essential worker during the pandemic: the UPS driver who consistently ensured timely deliveries while they sheltered at home. Workers from USPS, FedEx, and UPS played a crucial role in sustaining the economy, yet their dedication often went unrecognized during these trying times.
On his usual delivery route, UPS driver Anthony Gaskin encountered an unexpected scene. A line of cars stretched along the road, and he was puzzled until he spotted two children holding signs that read, “Hallsley loves you, Anthony.” The community members waved and cheered, revealing that this celebration was organized in his honor.
“Although his truck lacks sirens and his uniform does not provide fire protection, Anthony Gaskins is regarded as a hero in the Hallsley neighborhood,” Patty Friedman later communicated in an email to WTVR. “Throughout the COVID crisis, Anthony has remained dedicated, delivering an unprecedented number of packages—over 180 times to date.”
“I wanted to express my gratitude to him personally for making me feel welcomed when I moved in during the pandemic,” she continued. “It was an incredibly lonely time, and he was always the highlight of my day.”
Hundreds of Hallsley residents gathered along the road, arriving by bicycle, on foot, and in over 75 vehicles, eagerly anticipating Anthony’s arrival, as Patty recounted to WTVR. Describing him as a modest individual, she noted that he required some encouragement before he gradually drove his truck down the road. During this time, both children and adults displayed signs, shouted his name, honked their horns, and rang bells in celebration. Additionally, Gaskins’ supervisors were present to honor him with a gift.
This event reflects a well-deserved acknowledgment of the contributions Anthony and his colleagues make to their communities.
