The 64-year-old country music icon Alan Jackson has sold over 80 million CDs and enthralled listeners with his classic country and honky-tonk songs for more than 40 years. Particularly after disclosing a diagnosis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth illness, a degenerative neurological disorder, and mourning the passing of his son-in-law, Ben Selecman, a bright Assistant District Attorney, his journey has been characterized by tenacity.
Jackson has poured his heart into his music in spite of these setbacks, and albums such as “Where Have You Gone” (2021) and “Angels & Alcohol” (2015) reflect his own struggles. His daughter Mattie, who also drew strength from her faith, worked with him on the song “Racing the Dark,” which is a celebration of triumphing over suffering.
In addition to writing “Lemons on Friday,” a memoir detailing her experience with sorrow and recovery, Mattie co-founded NaSHEville, an organization that empowers women in Music City. In their moving opening, Alan and his wife Denise discuss their personal recovery journeys.
